The Nature of Astrology
We students of astrology all know that it is an incredible thing. We see its value in understanding ourselves and the people we interact with, and we see it as a tool in the helping professions. But there is much more to astrology than understanding symbols and learning techniques. Too much of a focus on the nuts and bolts of astrology can be like looking at the world through a tunnel. People who call themselves astrologers would likely benefit from paying more attention to the larger realities of both the past and our present moment that astrology operates within. In this talk I will discuss the reasons for astrology's rejection in our culture, the defects in the adoption of what might be called astrological exceptionalism, the larger problems of anthropocentrism, the need for stronger theoretical, philosophical and scientific foundations and the acknowledgement that astrology could use a good overhaul.
Bio: Bruce Scofield, Ph.D., is an author of books, articles and scientific research papers on astrology and other subjects. He maintained a full-time practice as a consulting astrologer for 45 years and has taught at the University of Massachusetts and Kepler College. His interests include the history of astrology, Mesoamerican astrology, mundane/natural astrology and explanations for astrological effects. His website is www.onereed.com.
