Who I am
My name is Elizabeth Rozan, previously known as Paula Gassmann. Regarding the legal name change, it was the result of an intense Pluto transit that can only be described as a shedding of a skin.
I have Libra Sun, Taurus Moon, Sag. Rising. I am an astrologer, a writer, and a life-long-metaphysical explorer. I have been exploring psychospiritual development since 1968.
How I Met Astrology
When I was 16, I had a classmate whose grandmother was an astrologer. When I visited her, and saw the charts she had spread out on the table, I recognized the symbols. I knew instantly that I would pursue this field; what surprised me was the number of roadblocks I encountered along the way. I was told repeatedly I could not become an astrologer (Conservative, Catholic Boston…), that astrology was a not to be taken seriously, or that it was a portal to the negative realm. That did not feel right to me, so I studied on my own. I later made connections to AFA and found some local teachers. This led to connecting to the Boston Star Rovers Astrological Association (Isabel Hickey, Frances McEvoy, et al), and to NCGR Boston, founded in 1979. I connected with ISAR, the Church of Light, and the OPA a few years later.
My Interests, Credentials, and Experience
Interest in cycles, the development over the life span and the desire to explore the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and transpersonal layers of experience led me to extensive study. I earned traditional academic degrees in Psychology, Writing, and Interdisciplinary Studies, with a concentration on Counseling Psychology and Adult Development. Blending the old with the new, I was glad to learn there were professional organizations that offered credentials in astrology. I joined NCGR in 1996, earned NCGR Level 4 certification in Counseling Astrology in 1999, followed by Church of Light certification (Teacher of Hermetic Philosophy) in 2000, and ISAR CAP in 2006.
While active in the astrological community, both locally and nationally, until the passing of Frances McEvoy in 2007, I had the opportunity to serve as publications editor, as host for local study groups and New Moon groups, and as moderator for an on line forum of international practitioners involved in analysis, politics, and research techniques. Additionally, I wrote numerous articles for NCGR, ISAR, The OPA, and Dell Horoscope.
My Current Astrological Interests
I continue to be interested in how people develop and actualize their potential over the given course of their life. I do not focus on one particular lineage or perspective. There are many techniques and approaches in the field of astrology; I have a steady practice of professional development through which I explore the range, and respond to trends.
For example, I recently earned certification in Spiritual Development Mentoring from ARE/Atlantic University, and have been studying trauma-informed dimensions of healing—personal, ancestral, and collective-- with Thomas Huebl for the last 10 years.
Holistic health, energy work, the spinal alignment, archetypal studies (including Tarot), contemporary spirituality, shamanism, and relationship studies are complementary disciplines that deepen my astrological understanding. I like to go with the flow of the natural rhythms and use what is needed in the moment. The perspectives gained from the cross-cultural Shamanic practices and Trans Neptunians/Dwarf Planets represent an expansive edge in psychospiritual development.
Artistic Expression
In addition to technical articles about technique and delineation, I write poetry, narrative non-fiction and fiction. During Covid, I compiled a collection of WWII letters, called Skywriting: Letters from the Northwest Staging Route (2020). More recently, I completed a memoir related to growing up in Boston in the 1960s called Fire Around Us (2023).
From a visual perspective, I experiment with acrylic, chalk pastel, and collage, and some of my work has been in local shows in Cambridge, Lexington, Arlington, and Belmont. I do not play a musical instrument, nor do I read music, but with musicians around me, I appreciate a range of musical styles and the inherent healing properties music provides.
